Last night, an equal marriage bill passed the New York State Senate and was signed into law by Governor Andrew Cuomo.

New York has become the sixth, and largest, state to achieve equal marriage. This is the first time in U.S. history that equal marriage has been ratified by a Republican-controlled legislature.

To celebrate, my friend Marc Faletti created this epic mash-up of the disco hit “YMCA”–a classic song about young gay men moving to New York City.

When you think about it, it’s the classic narrative of New York, retold so many times over the years about so many marginalized groups who traveled great distances seeking freedom and opportunity in the Empire State.

Watch! Dance!

The first same-sex marriage licenses will be available 29 days from now, on July 24. Unlike in Massachusetts, the first state to achieve equal marriage, there’s no residency requirement for getting hitched in New York.
