The New York Times has reported that Ahmed Wali Karzai, the brother of the Afghan president Hamid Karzai, is on the payroll of the Central Intelligence Agency. It says that Karzai, who is a suspected player in country’s opium trade, has received regular payments from the CIA over the last eight years for a variety of services including recruiting Afghan paramilitary forces. “The financial ties and close working relationship between the intelligence agency and Mr. Karzai raise significant questions about America’s war strategy, which is currently under review at the White House,” the Times reports.
