What’s the Latest Development?

A recent survey of 1,000 adults taken at London’s Science Museum showed that four-fifths of those under the age of 25 depend on the Internet and would feel “lost” without it, compared to just three in five older adults. Some of the things for which people rely on the Internet include self-diagnosing illnesses (half of women, 60 percent of under-25s), learning how to cook something (40 percent), and learning how to fix something (33 percent). The poll was commissioned to celebrate Web Lab, an exhibition created by the museum in cooperation with Google.

What’s the Big Idea?

Dependency on the Internet was inevitable, according to Nick Harkaway, author of The Blind Giant. “[It] has become part of the landscape and we shouldn’t be frightened of that. You’d feel very lost without your phone or other technologies. These things very rapidly become something you’re used to. Of course i feel incredibly irritated when the internet is out in my house…[b]ut the scientific evidence is very strong: you feel bewildered for a couple of days, and then you adapt.”
