Soon, You Too Can Have A Touch-Free Toilet
What’s the Latest Development?
Good news for germaphobes: In the next few months, Kohler plans to make available its Touchless Flush, a kit that gives to the common household toilet the same hands-free flushing capability found in many commercial and public institutions. When installed, it emits an invisible electromagnetic field above the tank. To flush the toilet, all a person has to do is wave their hand through the field, creating a slight disruption that triggers the flushing mechanism. The kit will sell for just under US$100.
What’s the Big Idea?
These days it’s not uncommon to find public restrooms in which sensors have eliminated the need to flush, turn on the faucet, pump soap, activate the hand dryer, and/or pull out a paper towel. In a press release on their Web site, Kohler marketing manager Brian Hedlund says, “In a recent study…we found that 51 percent of people surveyed are paranoid about germs in the bathroom. When looking at that same sample group but focusing on moms with children, that number jumps up to 65 percent.” The Touchless Flush kit will even contain labels that will help visitors know that their hosts are thinking about their health.
