What’s the Latest Development?

The hacktivist collective Anonymous has chosen today (Nov. 5) for members and supporters to protest in cities around the world as part of a “Million Mask March” against “billionaires who own banks and corporations who corrupt politicians who enslave the people in injustice.” Many of the protesters will wear masks adopted from “V for Vendetta,” a 2005 film that evokes Guy Fawkes, who participated in an assassination attempt on England’s King James I and was arrested on this day in 1605. Guy Fawkes Day was originally instituted to commemorate his failure to overthrow the standing government.

What’s the Big Idea?

In the last few years, Anonymous and related groups have either participated in or been attributed to numerous cyberattacks on governments, corporations, and organizations that oppose their causes. David Lloyd, who designed the mask used in “V for Vendetta,” says its use by the group represents “an all-purpose symbol of resistance to tyranny, even of perceived tyranny.” A Web site says protests will be held in 450 different locations; it also states that “All who claim anyone is in charge of Million Mask March knows little of Anonymous. There is no official site, and nobody is in charge: it’s a movement, not an organization.”
