He has provided information about Anwar al-Awlaki, a U.S.-born cleric who has emerged as a prominent Al Qaeda recruiter. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the ongoing investigation. Al-Awlaki has been linked to the 9/11 hijackers, the Fort Hood shootings and the botched Christmas Day bombing attempt. But, al-Awlaki that although Abdulmutallab said was his student, he didn’t tell him to carry out the operation, Al-Jazeera television reported. Yemeni officials have said they believe al-Awlaki met in Yemen with the 23-year-old Nigerian accused in the Christmas bombing.Al-Awlaki, who is believed to be hiding in the remote mountains of Yemen, spoke in an interview with a Yemeni journalist who reported it to the Al-Jazeera Web site.”
