The only privately owned copy of a historic list of names of Jews that were saved from Nazi concentration camps by Oskar Schindler has gone on sale for $2.2 million. “It’s the only [copy of the list] remaining in private hands,” said Gary Zimet, a historic document sales specialist, and is “arguably the most important World War II document.” It was compiled by Schindler and his accountant Itzhak Stern on April 18, 1945 and is 13 pages long. It was made famous by the book “Schindler’s Arc” and the later movie, “Schlindler’s List” by Steven Spielberg. The list contains the names of 801 men along with their occupations and birth dates. There were seven different versions of the list, only four of which are known to have survived, according to Zimet. One currently resides in the US Holocaust Museum, one is at the German federal archives at Koblenz, and two others are kept at the Yad Vashem museum in Israel. Zimet, who runs the auction website MomentsInTime.com is selling the list on a “first come, first served” basis on behalf of an anonymous vendor.
