Thinking of launching its own social network site, Google has criticized Facebook’s “friend” function because it creates networks that don’t respect the boundaries of real life. “Because ‘friends’ in the real world almost never precisely match our “friends” on Facebook, users often end up oversharing by accident or undersharing because they’re hesitant. And Facebook updates that users automatically post to ‘everyone’ are often only relevant or interesting to some people. [Google] has been in the relevance business for years. Has it figured out a way to better organize our relationships online to make social interactions more meaningful? If so, maybe it can give Facebook a run for its money.”
