What’s the Latest Development?

Individuals with advanced engineering degrees may be more successful entrepreneurs than MBA graduates, according to a new online survey. The business blog Identified combed its Facebook Rolodex and found that engineering post-graduates outnumbered MBA grads three to one when it came to owning an independent business. “Increasing doubts about both the value of MBAs and their creativity-destroying side effects may be partly to blame, as could the increasingly technical nature of many of the fastest growing business sectors.”

What’s the Big Idea?

The survey found other noteworthy changes occurring in the entrepreneurial world: The age of the average entrepreneur is falling, from 36 in 2008 to 33 in 2012. Where entrepreneurs get their training is also changing: “The Institute of Technology Bombay, Canada’s University of Waterloo and China’s Tsinghua University joined perennial American favorites Stanford, MIT, UC Berkeley, CalTech, and Carnegie Mellon among the most common training grounds of top engineers.” Overall, the survey suggests a more technical orientation to new business.
