It was not coincidental that Donald Rumsfeld was in New York City recently on the occasion of Henry Kissinger’s 89th birthday. “An occasional adversary and a permanent friend,” Kissinger looms large in Rumsfeld’s memoir, Known and Unknown, which is now out in paperback.

“Tell it like it happened, Don,” Kissinger urged Rumsfeld when the two discussed the writing of his book. “Don’t gloss things over. I didn’t,” Kissinger added with emphasis.

In the following interview, Rumsfeld tells it as it happened, and certainly as he sees it — “it” being a storied career in public service that made him both the youngest and the oldest Secretary of Defense in U.S. history.
