It hadn’t hit me before I saw it, but it’s true – we have 3-D printing pens, yet we still have to use bulky, stationary printers that don’t fit in our dynamic, mobile lifestyles. No more.

Six college students from the Jerusalem College of Technology have created the first portable printer and their Kickstarter campaign has already raised the initial capital needed to go in production. Pocket printer was created out of the need of its inventors. As all college students, they found themselves working from libraries, cafés, classrooms and trains, but struggled to find a place to print their papers. After seeing that there was no portable printer on the market they could buy, the only thing left was to make one themselves.

Print machines now-a-days are essentially a printhead running on a moving piece of paper. Why can’t we just put the printhead on a set of small wheels and let it run across a piece of paper?

That’s pretty much what the inventors did. The printer is activated by sliding a hatch at the bottom which reveals the inkjet. The inkjet lasts for over 1,000 printed pages and its rechargable battery lasts for over an hour. The Pocket Printer connects directly to smartphones and PCs and can print on any size of paper. True, it takes about a minute to print a page, which puts a limit of 60 pages per charge (as of now), but it is perfect for printing those one or two pages you just drafted in the coffee shop and need to hand in asap.
