Pope Benedict XVI has opted to turn the other cheek and yesterday met and forgave the woman who attacked him in Rome during Christmas Eve Mass. The woman, 25-year-old Susanna Mailo, had a history of mental illness and had been prevented from carrying out a similar attack before, met with the pontiff to receive his forgiveness. “The Pope, 82, who was not injured in the attack, ‘wanted to demonstrate his forgiveness’ and asked the Swiss-Italian about her health. Ms Maiolo, who has been treated in a clinic outside Rome since the incident, was prevented from carrying out a similar assault last year by security guards in the Vatican.”
