What’s the Latest Development?

Mobile analytics firm Flurry released a report this week in which it predicts that by the end of this month, China will have 16 million more active iOS and Android smartphones and tablets than the US, making it the world’s largest market for smart devices. The firm used app session tracking data — 2.4 billion sessions every day — for its report. Last month, China was only 1 million devices behind the US, and given that it’s been the fastest-growing smart-device market for at least a year, its new number-1 status was almost inevitable.

What’s the Big Idea?

Furthermore, China’s probably not giving up the top spot anytime soon, according to Flurry vice-president Peter Farago: “China has over 1.3 billion people while the U.S. has just over 310 million…[T]he only other country that could feasibly overtake China sometime in the future is India, with a population of just over 1.2 billion.” For various reasons, smart devices haven’t yet gained as much of a hold in India, which is why it ranked ninth on Flurry’s list along with Brazil and Russia. Coming in third was the UK, followed by South Korea and Japan.
