Is It Time to Say Goodbye to Artificial Trans Fats?
The public has 60 days to comment on an FDA proposal to eliminate artificial trans fats, the culprit in 20,000 heart attacks and 7,000 deaths from heart disease each year, according to the agency’s commissioner.
Under the proposal, the burden will be on the food industry to prove that partially hydrogenated oils are safe to eat. That will be a difficult burden to overcome, but according to some experts, trans fats won’t be that difficult to replace.
The nutritionist Marion Nestletold Big Think:
They don’t have a taste. They don’t have a flavor. They can be replaced. There are ways to replace them. It’s not even very expensive to replace them. There’s no reason for them to be in the food supply at all. So in that sense I’m not opposed to the trans fat ban.
