Thomas Hardy (1840-1928) was an English novelist and poet who wrote during the Victorian era. A trained architect, Hardy took more interest in his writing and gained fame as the author of novels such as Far from the Madding CrowdThe Mayor of Casterbridge, and Tess of the d’Urbervilles. Hardy was a Victorian realist in the vein of Charles Dickens, and his writings were frequently critical of Victorian society. His works served as a major influence to English writers in the first half of the 20th century.
