What is Big Think?

We are Big Idea Hunters…

We live in a time of information abundance, which far too many of us see as information overload. With the sum total of human knowledge, past and present, at our fingertips, we’re faced with a crisis of attention: which ideas should we engage with, and why? Big Think is an evolving roadmap to the best thinking on the planet — the ideas that can help you think flexibly and act decisively in a multivariate world.

A word about Big Ideas and Themes — The architecture of Big Think

Big ideas are lenses for envisioning the future. Every article and video on bigthink.com and on our learning platforms is based on an emerging “big idea” that is significant, widely relevant, and actionable. We’re sifting the noise for the questions and insights that have the power to change all of our lives, for decades to come. For example, reverse-engineering is a big idea in that the concept is increasingly useful across multiple disciplines, from education to nanotechnology.

Themes are the seven broad umbrellas under which we organize the hundreds of big ideas that populate Big Think. They include New World Order, Earth and Beyond, 21st Century Living, Going Mental, Extreme Biology, Power and Influence, and Inventing the Future.

What's the Latest Development?

In yet another sign of the shift from traditional television to mobile technology, Disney executives have announced that the first nine episodes of their new series "Sheriff Callie's Wild West" will only be available online via a Web site and the Watch Disney Junior mobile app starting next month. The series will then debut on the Disney Junior and Disney Channel TV networks early next year. Disney Junior Worldwide executive vice-president Nancy Kanter says, "This is an entirely new approach for us. We have been amazed at how quickly kids have embraced this new technology. We’re talking billions of minutes spent watching."

What's the Big Idea?

Television executives throughout the industry continue to pay close attention to how viewers of all ages use mobile technology. After company research revealed that more than half of homes with children also contain a tablet, Disney redesigned its Disney Junior site to reflect a "tablet first" sensibility to further capture its target audience of kids ages 2-7. Disney-ABC Television Group executive Albert Cheng says that ever since the Watch Disney Junior app debuted in mid-2012, they've gotten "a lot of e-mails from dads saying, ‘Thanks for giving me back my TV.'"
