I know many of you have been a little frustrated by the transition here and especially your ability to leave comments effectively. I understand and appreciate your frustrations - any time there is a change like this, it isn't really until the shakedown that real problems come out, and that is what we're seeing. I can give you at least some guidance here if you haven't figured it out already (however, it seems many of you have).

A lot of basic HTML works in the comment boxes:

  • Bold is allowed by <b></b> or <strong></strong>
  • Italics is allowed by <i></i> or <em></em>
  • A link is allowed using <a href="URL></a>

I know that many of you are used to the latitude that Moveable Type offered on ScienceBlogs, however here there is still some work and transitioning going on behind the scenes in terms of the blogging and blog reading/commenting experience, so again, I'll ask for your patience. However, one thing that is frustrating me about the current commenting discussion is the tone of the discussion. One thing that we have always excelled on Eruptions is having a (mostly) civil and reasonable discussion of the issues at hand. A few times I've had to interject to keep it civil, but the current discussion on the commenting problems is very close to that edge. I am more than happy to hear your criticisms and suggestions on how to improve the commenting system, but to imply that this is some grand conspiracy against you or laziness/incompetence on my/BT part is baseless and hurtful (to me at least). I did not want to air my laundry in terms of why I left ScienceBlogs, but I had very good reasons - both for me and the blog - for the move and I thought that the offer from BigThink in terms of what the blog will become was excellent. You will have to trust me on this one.

The fact that they are willing to discuss and implement changes to help the commenting experience is evidence in itself that this was a good move. I realize that there are many things that you find difficult with the new system, but you can be assured that I and the folks here are working to alleviate the problem, but it might not happen overnight. BigThink is also in a transition with their blogs right now but I am not at liberty to discuss those details.

So, please, do not hesitate to contact me via email about any problems, suggestions or comments you have on the new site or the commenting system. I have forwarded a number of problems on to the tech support people and they have been working with me on them. However, try to understand that there will be moving pains and that this will not likely end up being exactly like ScienceBlogs - and that was part of the reason for the move. Good things are coming, and hopefully soon, so I ask for your patience and your civility.I will keep you posted on any developments.
