Glenn Beck Denounces "Born In The USA" as Anti-American

Twenty-six years after the release of Bruce Springsteen's hit song, "Born in The USA," conservative talk show host/performance artist Glenn Beck finally got around to listening to the lyrics.

Beck was shocked, shocked to discover that for all these years he'd been rocking out to a song about a bitter down-and-out Vietnam vet who has been kicked to the curb by the aforementioned USA.

Is Beck aware that conservative demigod Ronald Reagan used "Born in the USA" as a theme song for his reelection campaign? The cognitive dissonance is going to smart. Beck loves Reagan. "Because of Ronald Reagan, my grandfather, my father, I have hope for America," Beck told an audience at the conservative CPAC conference earlier this year.

Yesiree, The Gipper loved The Boss. Reagan thought Springsteen was a shining example of hope. According to Roadside America:

On the afternoon on September 19, 1984, President Ronald Reagan spoke before an enthusiastic crowd in downtown Hammonton, New Jersey. The speech was mostly political boilerplate, but it did contain one memorable passage. "America's future," Reagan said, "rests in the message of hope in songs of a man so many young Americans admire, New Jersey's Bruce Springsteen."

People even vaguely familiar with the songs of Bruce Springsteen know that they rarely contain messages of hope for America's future. But Reagan was oblivious.

Beck correctly senses that Springsteen didn't reciprocate Reagan's admiration. The campaign didn't get Springsteen's permission to use "Born in the USA" as a theme song. When the artist found out, he put a stop to it.

In the same video clip, Beck urges his viewers to wake up and realize that Woody Guthrie's beloved anthem "This Land is Your Land" is unpatriotic, despite the fact that we all sang it at summer camp, and the lyrics make perfect sense (even to Beck). I am not making this up.

When I was a kid I had a next door neighbor, maybe 9-years-old, who used to sit in his yard and sing this song endlessly for hours on end. He must have had over 50 different variations on the main lyric like "Born in the U - S - A!" or "Born in the UUUUU SSSSS AAAAA!" and on an on, each variation different but still similar in spirit to the original music. While I have to give the little bugger kudos for creativity, he drove me half out of my mind Clockwork Orange style with the endless repetition of that damn song to the point I absolutely abhor it to this day. I'd love to hire that kid to entertain the Becknoid someday. Speaking of Woodie Guthrie lyrics, my little sister used to sing a version of that song that would be more to Beck's capitalist liking: This land is my land, this land's not your land. Stay the hell off my land, or I will kill you. I will rip your throat out, I will bash your brains in. This land was made for me not you. (Out of the mouths of babes...)

What a nitwit!! The siege at Khe Sanh was a major significant battle of the Viet Nam war and many young American soldiers died or were wounded there. I mean anybody that has listened to any of the many documentaries about Viet Nam would have heard Khe Sanh repeated over and over and yet this meathead pronounces it as "Khe Shan". And yes....many of those same young men came home to find out that "No, your position is no longer available....so sorry" or at the VA "So something doesn't feel right in your head now.....Hey, so OK, war is hell, get over it." It's really too bad that so many people listen to and believe this moron.

Reagan's scam was very successful, alas. George Will even got an interview with Springsteen's drummer and spun it hard. The retraction, as always, stayed on the back pages.

When is Beck gonna start denouncing the Pledge of Allegiance? It was written by a socialist.

My favorite version of "This Land is Your Land" was sung by Arlo Guthrie. It included a verse that went like this: "As I went walking through the Redwood Forest I saw a sign there said "No Trespassing" But on the other side it didn't say nothing That side was made for you and me!

I think it's obvious that popular song lyrics were picked apart during the 1980s. Too much innuendo and euphemism in songs like "Beat It" and "She Bop" inspired congressional hearings if I recall correctly. Somebody needs to tell Beck that "Louie Louie" was investigated by the FBI for intending to sound Jamaican instead of American. When Beck declares that watching National Lampoon's Animal House is unpatriotic, maybe his fans will begin to take him unseriously.

Not to split hairs, but pretty much everyone who died at Khe Sanh was a Marine, not a soldier. Soldiers are in the Army. Marines do not like to be called soldiers.

Keith, not to split hairs, but don't think the song mentions army, soldier or marine (If I am not mistaken: "got in a little hometown jam, so they put a rifle in my hand." "Got a brother in Khe Sanh, they're still there he's all gone") but thanks for the clarification.

I think Keith was referring to my comment about the young Americans that died at Khe Sanh. Point taken....but having been a soldier in the Army I recall that we called the Marines a lot of other things at the time.

Hate mongering disguised as conservatism. As a moderate he and other like commentators have contributed to the mess the republican party has become. What really is anti-American is attacking a person for questioning problems within our own society. And how old is that song? It goes to show his material is pretty thin.
