What is Big Think?

We are Big Idea Hunters…

We live in a time of information abundance, which far too many of us see as information overload. With the sum total of human knowledge, past and present, at our fingertips, we’re faced with a crisis of attention: which ideas should we engage with, and why? Big Think is an evolving roadmap to the best thinking on the planet — the ideas that can help you think flexibly and act decisively in a multivariate world.

A word about Big Ideas and Themes — The architecture of Big Think

Big ideas are lenses for envisioning the future. Every article and video on bigthink.com and on our learning platforms is based on an emerging “big idea” that is significant, widely relevant, and actionable. We’re sifting the noise for the questions and insights that have the power to change all of our lives, for decades to come. For example, reverse-engineering is a big idea in that the concept is increasingly useful across multiple disciplines, from education to nanotechnology.

Themes are the seven broad umbrellas under which we organize the hundreds of big ideas that populate Big Think. They include New World Order, Earth and Beyond, 21st Century Living, Going Mental, Extreme Biology, Power and Influence, and Inventing the Future.

My Advice to My Younger Self

July 20, 2013, 5:00 AM
Tito

If I could go back and talk to my younger self about what makes a successful career I think that I would have told myself in the beginning that I should make a list of what I’m good at and what I love to do and just go straight to that.

I got out of college right at the wrong time when the economy was going down, the oil business was going down.  And it wasn’t easy to find a job.  It’s a lot like today, with lots of kids getting out of college and there are just not a lot of jobs.

I think that if I could have just talked to myself I would have put my arm around myself and said, “Hey, little buddy, it’s gonna be okay.”  I'd give myself a little pat on the back, and say, "don’t worry." "Let me tell you, it’s all going to work out. You’re gonna come up with a Vodka company, it’s going to be this hair-brained scheme, but it’s all going to work out. Thanks self, that’s great."

60 Second Reads is recorded in Big Think's studio.
