In all our variety, what do we Americans have at the core that makes it possible for us to live civilly together, even bond as a people? Is that core essence idealistic, realistic, pragmatic, cynical? Is it what we think we live by or mainly a goal we have? Are we satisfied with this essence or with ourselves? If not, what is wrong that we do not change ourselves or it?
