Companies Go Green (Quietly)

Greenbiz.com founder and editor Joel Makower stopped by the Big Think offices today to talk about the business of sustainability. He brought up an interesting point: many of the largest companies today are working toward lowering their carbon footprint, yet few of them do very much to publicize the actions they are taking. Why is that? Makower thinks companies don’t want to point to little victories out of fear that it might make more apparent how far they have left to go.

Makower also talked about the need for a global sustainability standard, which he is in the process of creating with a company called Underwriter’s Laboratories. Would such a rating system raise the curtain on bad corporate practices? Makower doesn’t think so. These days, most businesses actually are spending time and resources on becoming greener and more sustainable.
