Revolution Far From Over in Egypt

Egypt's euphoria over the ousting of President Hosni Mubarak in February later gave way to a creeping realization that the regime had not been toppled at all. What lies ahead?

What’s the Latest Development?

In Egypt, euphoria over Mubarak’s ousting in February later gave way to a creeping realization that the regime had not been toppled at all. Egypt has always defied tidy theories, and the complexity of the political machinations has overwhelmed analysis. But the desire for a fair and representative government remains a constant.

What’s the Big Idea?

As for the election outcome, the final vote will not be tallied until January. Preliminary estimates suggest the Muslim Brotherhood have so far won about forty per cent of the vote, but it’s not yet clear that the Islamists will be allowed the means to govern. Expect prolonged wrangling over the position of the armed forces and constitutional change because, “At this point, the only thing that is certain is that the revolution is far from over.”
