Don't confuse the international confrontation between Islam and the West with the local problem of absorbing Muslims into European societies, warns "Infidel" author Ayaan Hirsi Ali. Reflecting on last year's Swiss referendum on minarets, she argues that native Europeans have been accepting of Muslims. "If those people who cry that Europe is intolerant are right...There would have been an exodus of Muslims out of Europe." She says the great paradox of today’s Europe is that the working class, who for generations voted for the left, now find themselves voting for right-wing parties.
