China Leads World on IT Research

No country publishes more scientific research in reputable journals than the U.S.A. but China has now passed it in the I.T. field and is breathing down America’s neck in others.

What's the Latest Development?

In 2009, for the first time, Chinese researchers published more papers on I.T. than those in the U.S., with both countries churning out more than 100,000 info-tech publications. Having Google and Microsoft based in the U.S. did not preserve American dominance. In clean and alternative energy, Chinese researchers have likewise been publishing up a storm, not surpassing U.S. researchers but coming close.

What's the Big Idea?

But China lags well behind when it come to biology and medicine research, which is still dominated by the U.S., with the U.K. a distant second. Forbes says it's likely thanks to the heavy presence of most major drug companies in the U.S.. "Outside of biology, though, the SciVal analysis seems to confirm what many worrywarts have been saying for years: that the U.S. is losing the edge in research that it has had at least since World War II."
