Female Sexual Stimulation in the Brain

Different areas on a woman's body which are sensitive to sexual stimulation correspond in surprising ways to different parts of the brain. The vagina and the clitoris are separate.

What’s the Latest Development?

The locations of the vagina, cervix and female nipples that correspond to the brain’s cortex have been mapped for the first time. The study confirms that there is a difference between stimulating the vagina and the clitoris and that there is a direct neurological link between a woman’s nipples and her genitals. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, scientists also have confirmed that the position of the clitoris in the brain is approximately in the same position as the penis in men.

What’s the Big Idea?

The study out of Rutgers University in Newark, New Jersey, confirms anecdotal accounts of women achieving orgasm through non-genital stimulation. Knowledge of neural connections made during sexual stimulation “could also help women who have suffered nerve damage in childbirth or because of diseases like diabetes.” Contrary to the current understanding of the ‘sensory homunculus’, or the connection between different body parts and the brain, the connection between nipple stimulation and clitoral stimulation could supplement an orgasm.
