William Castle commented on Should Supermarket Clinics Replace Doctors’ Offices? on July 1, 2009, 10:24 AM

What about the level of care at those clinics? While they may be incredibly convenient to visit, I think that I might be concerned that the individual there is not as talented as the Dr. who I visit at an specific medial office or hospital. I might be very concerned about a misdiagnosis.

William Castle commented on Imagine This: A Health Care System Organized Around the Patient! on July 1, 2009, 10:20 AM

I think that treating people in a fragmented way is a product of american capitalism. While chronically people do have complicated needs, and healthcare would be better off it was indeed organized around the needs of the patient, in reality the core driver of health solutions is profit. Public and private companies which provide healthcare solutions only respond to a profit motive.  I beleive that only with a fully socialized medical program would care entities respond only to patient needs. But the problem with this is that then companies are not properly incentivized to innovate.

I wish that Ms. Garrett had been more specific when talking about the problems regarding rapid diagnostics - stupid stuff that corporations in developed countries or good government could fix. I am skeptical that it would be that easy to fix by either entity, because if it was, it would have been already. What is the major hurdle to overcome to put us in the right direction?

William Castle commented on The Healthcare System's Dirty Secrets on July 1, 2009, 10:04 AM

I was shocked that electronic medical records was the first item on Mr. Porter's agenda when speaking about improving the healthcare system. But by pointing to it as a platform for measuring results - something that is problematic today - he convinced me of it's importance. I think that this type of solution needs to be better communicated to the government so that they can move it upward on the reform agenda.

I was suprised that Mr. Christensen did not comment further on the fact that many other countries are controling heathcare costs by offering less and less healthcare. Won't that become problematic in the longterm, as eventually the healthcare solutions that are offered will not meet the needs of the people who it serves? He says that a great deal of the healthcare offered in the US is not needed - but isn't it better to have too much healthcare than too little?
