I am a 25 year old Iowan. I run a very small soy candle business in addition to my day job. I love music, creativity, philosophy, literature, and people. I'm just trying to figure it all out like everybody else.

As a woman in the U.S. who thinks of women as beautiful, intelligent, independant, and nurturing creatures, I am often taken aback by the effect that consumerism and wealth is seemingly having on today's woman. I often see women who seem so involved in material goods (Gucci bags, Chanel shoes) that they are outwardly projecting these things as important to our young girls and women. I worry: Where's the substance? Where is the positive influence to teach our girls to evolve beyond material things and gain intellect, confidence, and/or spirituality in order to make themselves whole? It seems that as a culture we are attempting to fill spiritual voids with... stuff. I worry that women are underestimating their power to contribute to a female society that could one day evolve beyond being a statistically viable marketing segmant, and rather be driven by philosophy, philanthropy, and ideals. It seems to me that sufferagists and other feminists fought for much more than our right to cute shoes. Our shopping malls are filled with teen girls sauntering around in "Diva", and "Spoiled Brat" t-shirts. Is anyone else worried about the future of women in this nation that is supposed to be so liberated?
