What is Big Think?

We are Big Idea Hunters…

We live in a time of information abundance, which far too many of us see as information overload. With the sum total of human knowledge, past and present, at our fingertips, we’re faced with a crisis of attention: which ideas should we engage with, and why? Big Think is an evolving roadmap to the best thinking on the planet — the ideas that can help you think flexibly and act decisively in a multivariate world.

A word about Big Ideas and Themes — The architecture of Big Think

Big ideas are lenses for envisioning the future. Every article and video on bigthink.com and on our learning platforms is based on an emerging “big idea” that is significant, widely relevant, and actionable. We’re sifting the noise for the questions and insights that have the power to change all of our lives, for decades to come. For example, reverse-engineering is a big idea in that the concept is increasingly useful across multiple disciplines, from education to nanotechnology.

Themes are the seven broad umbrellas under which we organize the hundreds of big ideas that populate Big Think. They include New World Order, Earth and Beyond, 21st Century Living, Going Mental, Extreme Biology, Power and Influence, and Inventing the Future.

You Spoke, We Listened: Legendary Hacker Kevin Mitnick to Appear on Big Think

July 20, 2011, 3:40 PM
Kevin_wanted

In a previous post, we asked you who you want to see featured on video at Big Think. The response was overwhelming to say the least. From UAW President Bob King to Tesla Motor's CEO Elon Musk to former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, many of the people that you suggested were already on our radar. However, we were thrilled to discover that a large number of the suggestions included Big Thinkers who we had not previously considered. One such person was computer security consultant, author, and former computer hacker Kevin Mitnick, who we're happy to say will now be joining us at our studio on August 17th.

It would be fair to say that Mitnick will be one of our more controversial guests. Formerly the most wanted computer criminal in the United States, Mitnick is now a leading voice in discussions involving cyber-security, hacking and the future of privacy. After serving five years in prison for four counts of wire fraud, two counts of computer fraud and one count of illegally intercepting wire communications, he is now the owner of Mitnick Security Consulting. We encourage you to share your questions for Mr. Mitnick in the comment section below! Thank you Big Think user Brock S Lynch for suggesting Mr. Mitnick.
