Unfortunately this represents what Americans dislike about opinions from overseas. Several individual points are powerful, but the tone is rather condescending and assumes the value of a cosmopolitan lifestyle — which is not universally valued, nor should it be.

America simply does not have the history, homogeneous character, or the social fabric to create a little Geneva or Stockholm in every city. What America should and must do, though, is recognize the power of the ideas coming out of Europe and Asia, from urban planning to green technology, and further our own tradition of community and values to develop our cities.
