I wish to send Sherman Alexie a copy of a book about peace through politics and the rule of law. It is entitled “The Great American Experiment.” The book claims that to regain constitutional integrity, the Constitution needs to be read in the context of organic law; the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the original Constitution provide the foundation for constitutional intent. This intent is taken from the people of the Iroquoi whose internal polity enabled several nations to peacefully co-exist, propably, for a longer period than what is recorded in history.

If we avoid progress in any respect for the sake of ‘romance,’ a word we apply to anything older than ourselves, we’re doomed. Further, celebrating flaws and imperfections to such an extent that losing them is a tragedy seems sick.

As for $300 reading devices, what a horribly flawed argument, punctuated by that daft laugh. That’s $300 for a device that can then store and display thousands of books worth of text for a fraction of the price per book, not to mention being 1% of 1% of 1% of the mass and volume of said thousands of books.

My partner and I have a combined annual income of less than $5,000 and we own a Kindle and two iPods nanos, three purchases that have saved us enough money to buy one full-sized meal each week rather than living entirely off leftover junk-food from our roommates. I kid you not.

I can see how a $300 reading device could not be a net gain for light readers, but don’t make some mistake of thinking that only the upper crust of society is intellectual.

Unless, of course, that’s a beautiful mistake you’d like to cherish and sell.

Ah! Clever one, you are.
