Europe has high speed trains and a great transportation system. American has only a dependence on oil and the automobile. The petroleum companies have not built a new refinery in over 15 years. That is not acceptable. It is causing high gas prices for Americans.
Americans must get off of our dependence on oil. American needs more and better mass transportation. I cannot go to other cities within 40 miles of where I live on Mass transit. There should be better Mass transit.

I am not sure rail transport saves a lot of fuel. Recent calculations in Europe have shown that energy consumption per rail passenger/mile is close to automobile levels. The challenge is to build smaller, lighter, more fuel efficient cars.
