Robert Ryan commented on REINCARNATION JUST MAKES SENSE. on January 21, 2008, 11:49 AM
Central to the concept of reincarnation is the existence of a soul or self that is independent of the body and is able to move from one life to another. During a triple by-pass operation, my step-dad, who was as agnostic as they come, experienced coming out of his body and hovering over the operating table, where he watched the surgeons trying to save his life. He had a complete sense of self in that bodiless state. Then suddenly he experienced being drawn back into his body--the surgeons were successful--and he recovered from the operation. Immediately thereafter he searched for published accounts by others who had had the same experience. They are numerous, available in most bookstores.

Psychology does indeed need a unified knowledge foundation, such as that being built by physicists from theories of the Unified Field. For the relevance of physics to psychology, one might examine the work of quantum physicist John Hagelin, who suggests a one-to-one correspondence between the Unified Field and the simplest form of human consciousness experienced during the practice of transcendental meditation. Once mind is understood by psychologists as deeply as physicists understand matter, psychology can come into its own. Until then, a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing.

Robert Ryan commented on Big Think - A Statement of Disappointment on January 21, 2008, 2:45 PM
If this were a social networking site, I would agree, but this is a forum for ideas. An idea has an identity of its own, defined by the importance of its subject, the clarity of its expression, and the force of its logic. The name of the site is BigThink, not BigThinkers.
