I admit, while I am a foodie (when I can afford it) and have lived in many places that she describes, I find her tone inescapably naive and simply bourgeois. She sounds like a callow snob.

Kates is right. He says flat out he doesn't know much, then says it's ok. What in the world is this doing here? It is a waste of time.

I would like to hear what he thinks of the NGOs. Certainly, I agree regarding the big bureaucracies, the failure of the press to inquire, etc. But you are talking about issues that don't concern the overwhelming majority of people, for whom the issue is just an occasional picture they see and who don't have the motivation or tools to really dig deeply. I saw this guy speak at Davos, where he was debating Bill Gates and Paul Wolfowitz on what constitutes effective aid, and he was good and very thoughtful.
I am an independent writer, which is what I always wanted to be.
Most of my work is now for business schools, though I consider myself more of a journalist than a business writer. There is nothing more stimulating to me than to go to a place, meet people who are doing things, and get them to explain to me how they do it - as a story. So far, my search for stories has taken me to China, Japan, India, Indonesia, Europe, South Africa, and the US.
My family is the most important thing in my life. I have been married nearly 20 years, for the most part happily, and have a girl (12) and boy (8). We have just bought an 18C farmhouse on Lac Annecy, nestled in the Alps.
My hobby is to write reviews for Amazon, as a kind of record of what I have been into.
Though an ex-pat, I am deeply concerned with the direction that the US is taking. I absolutely despise the current administration as the worst in living memory, if perhaps ever in US history. The only administration that I think might be worse is that of Andrew Johnson, which mismanaged Reconstruction, creating more than a century of problems that are still to be fully resolved.
