Libertarianism in the United States grows out of the classical liberal philospy of people like John Locke and Thomas Jefferson. The problem with “modern” liberals and “neo” conserviatives is that they retain some aspects of classical liberalism from our founding but have deviated from them in serious ways as well. The old right or classical conservatives would oppose military interventionism and moralism which is so common among the neoconservative republicans of today. classical liberals would support limited government which is not a popular idea among modern liberals. If modern liberals went back to classical liberalism and neoconservatism when back to classical conservatism they would be basically almost the same, and would both be truly libertarian in outlook.
