There is an ironic twist to laws protecting privacy: it's the barriers to accessing information by lawyers and physicians and families seeking to help the person. As a lawyer, I have witnessed situations where public authorities refuse to provide information on the stated basis that consent forms are not signed. While there is ostensibly a legitimate purpose to protecting the information, public authorities seem disinclined to weigh appropriate considerations when facing a request for access to information.

Personal privacy is a staple of our rights. If we choose to surrender our privacy it is a matter of choice. If any person or corporation had the ability to access our entire private life eg. digitally, we become vulnerable to the exploitation of our personal health, wealth, religion, etcetera, etcetera. Sign away my rights based on the fear mongering of terrorists having privacy, never. An average of 100 Americans a year die from international terrorism. Within the US that number drops to a nearly obsolete number. We have more pressing issues on our streets outside then we have terrorist activity effecting our lives. A lack of privacy further instigates that of the very notable police state we are becoming. Before and since 9/11 I might add, every terrorist act attempted within our borders has been thwarted by good old fashioned police work. Not homeland security and not by tapping my phone…
