Randy Burgess commented on Is Depression an Adaptation? on March 3, 2010, 2:19 AM

I've read some of Andrews' research, and find it sloppy. He misdefines what "rumination" means to most researchers, misinterprets a type of therapy called "expressive writing" as a form of rumination (it's not), and in general feels free to offer ungrounded speculation as "theory." The fact that as an low-level academic he is able to publish his drivel and get media attention for it reflects not the validity to his theories (there isn't any) but the sad state of psychology as a profession.

Randy Burgess commented on How the Tape Recorder Killed Journalism on September 30, 2009, 9:01 AM

Talese is complaining the tape recorder helped kill intelligent writing, and here we are on Big Think with - wait for it - not just a tape recording of Talese, but a video recording! He did consent to be interviewed, of course - yet I wonder if he noticed the irony.

Randy Burgess commented on Why (I Think) Conservatism is Unnatural on September 12, 2009, 8:01 AM

"That is how I feel about conservatism as a philosophy. I want to say why — not to persuade anyone but because, in circumstances where reasoned arguments won’t move people, the best we can do is understand each other better." I will pass over your gross misunderstanding and misuse of what is speculative science at best, and ask only this: how is describing an opposing group ("conservatives," in this case) as "unnatural" going to help increase understanding between persons identifying with that label and yourself? It is more likely to inflame than anything else.
