Why do the American people vote against what they want?

Why do the American people vote against what they want? If you ask people what they believe on a specific issue, they are willing to tell you. They then go and support candidates that do not have their viewpoints.  What makes them decide to do this? Why would they contradict themselves? What factors contribute to this?
