Good points regarding the historical viewpoint of marriage vs. the modern reality of it. Society IS saturated with sex on some level, and some people have unrealistic expectations of a sex-life, or too many other things going on to make it any sort of priority.
Love-sex is a wonderful thing, but I think married couples are rarely on the same page in a sexual relationship, women become way too high-maintenance, especially as they become more complacent, and settled in to a relationship that they take for granted, sex-starving the men until the damage is irreversible.
I think it's much harder on the men than the women to remain monogamous. I realize there are more mental issues to sex for the women. Perhaps this is instinct, or genetics, but it sure would be nice if married men weren't perceived as weak chauvanist pigs when their wives neglect them to the point where they give up on them, and seek out a "f**k buddy". Every time a prominent figure gets exposed for an affair, you can bet there's a wife that's been neglecting him for years behind the scenes claiming victim status.
Too many married men bear the brunt of womens neglect in this department, a little "just for fun" sex goes a long way toward maintaining a long-term relationship.
Lighten up, wives, it's only safe-sex!
