Peter Stanton commented on World Unity For God on July 26, 2009, 1:03 AM

What purpose would having one world religion serve?  Are you one of those who thinks that religion is the cause of all or most of the evil in the world?  Check history.  Stalin, Mao and Hitler were in no way religious and if my numbers are correct they have been responsible for the most deaths and misery.  The big three I just mentioned made up their own morality as they went with the general rule "I do what I want and am accountable to no one".  They behaved as very intelligent animals grabing power and spreading their ideology.  From an atheist view I cannot say that they were immoral because if there is no god then there is no morality.  It's simply survival of the fittest. What is the reference point for morality for an atheist? Is there agreement on the issue?  While I am on the subject...I noticed that the population of the EU with all of it's evolved thinking, is imploding.  I think that since you have no significant religion anymore, you have no real purpose except self indulgence which apparently doesn't include reproduction.  meanwhile you are being invaded by fundamentalist Muslims who have an average of 6 children.  If you think fundy Christians are scary take a look at Islam. Cheers.

Poking holes in various religions or pointing out the things that annoy you about these same religions does not disprove the existence of a god.  The fact is, the energy and matter in the universe seems to have come from nothing.  To me that sounds like a creation event by something or someone transcendent of time and space as we currently understand them. I can only prove Christianity to a point with some circumstantial  and historical evidence.  After that it is simply a leap of faith.  I guess I’m an agnostic who just took the leap.  It makes me feels better and act better.  Science also shows it has health benefits. Why are atheists always so angry?  Your lack of a belief is in fact just another unproven worldview so how are you hard core atheists any different from a Bible literalist who is “sure” he is right?  People who are “sure” they are right scare me.

Peter Stanton commented on Ray Kurzweil on Living Well Forever on July 25, 2009, 9:17 PM

There is not enough information in Ray's short video to support his idea of living forever.  Clearly inflammation and free radicals that cause cell damage are major causes of aging as well as genetic programming.  We are programmed to age.  If one led a life of totally organic foods, healthy BMI and every supplement known to man I don't think the avg person would live more than an extra 10 yrs than they would have if they lived a typical lifestyle.  The keys to significant life extension will be the correction of genetic errors in the cell such as cancer and somehow keeping the cells replicating in a healthy way.  Can we do it?  I don't think so.  I seems that sometimes when we mess with Mother Nature too much we get a kick in the ass.  Great drugs lead to super bacteria. Hormone replacement therapy increases breast cancer.    Throughout human history, had we not reproduced and eventually died we never would have been able to adapt to the environment.  Seeking earthly eternal life seems kind of selfish and narcissistic to me. Ray's calculated metabolic age may be 40 but he looks about 61 so at least his skin is aging, he is losing his hair, his hands show signs of moderate arthritis, his teeth are worn and his vision is significantly impaired.  I'm also quite sure that an MRI of his spine would show the typical signs of joint wear and disk dessication typical of his age.
