Peter,

When you start your talk with, “we are biological beings that have evolved……”  any point that follows after that regarding ethics has no basis.  if you have no basis for right and wrong, then you can have no basis for morality or ethics.  Animals work on survival of the fittest, if that is the basis we start from, then it is our job to destroy the weak.  Ethics and morality can only come from a basic idea of right and wrong that is unchanging, and universally known.  If you leave God out of the picture, then discussing morality is just a culture based rule system that looks at what the norm is, and then assumes that that is the “right” thing to do.

Steve,

I believe you are mistaken when you say any point that follows “we are biological” regarding ethics has no basis. Dr. Singer has laid a foundation for ethics, which is to create a society wherein folks can live freely and happily.

It’s true animals work on survival ofthe fittest, but that doesn’t mean we have to go out and “destroy the weak”. It could very well mean that cooperating with each other is what we need to do to survive. Ethics can and perhaps should be like any science, that is, subject to change as circumstances change.

Many people make this assumption that without “God” ethics is not possible, but that is wrong.
