Technological Mediation

We are all part of a vast, ongoing sociological experiment, indeed a criminological experiment. Technology offers us the opportunity to share increasingly intimate aspects of our lives online, often with strangers. While technology breaks down barriers and can bring people closer together, it also makes us all more vulnerable. Moreover, as technology pervades every aspect of our lives, our real relationships are threatened.

As our relationships are mediated by technology, being connected can result in actually being more disconnected with each other. This is the major theme of Henry-Alex Rubin's new film, Disconnect, and the subject of today's lesson
