Tuesday’s Big Idea
Gaming
The gaming industry has made great strides in recent years. It has become the fastest growing form of media today and has been recognized by educators as a valuable classroom tool.
However, as the industry matures it still has plenty of need for self-reflection. No, video games may not be the cause of massacres like the recent event as Sandy Hook Elementary School. However, gaming culture is very much a boys club, critics charge, and portrayals of women in games are downright backwards. Moreover, online gaming can promote a pack mentality in which there are incentives to harass women.
And yet, as disturbing as certain forms of "cybermob" behavior may be, young girls are turning to gaming like never before, and throwing open the doors of the boys club.
