Core Skill: Leveraging Strengths
How do you measure the talent of Michael Jordan? Was he the sum of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar plus Magic Johnson divided by Wilt Chamberlain? Of course not. You can't put talent in an equation like that. Michael Jordan was, after all, a unique force in basketball, who had his own set of talents that he used to succeed during a distinct era in basketball. He was not some version of another player. He was Michael Jordan.
According to the astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, you need to approach your own career the same way if you want to be someone special. What are the talents that you excel at? How can you layer those talents onto your education? Can you create opportunities for yourself to succeed at doing what you do best?
If everyone can but themselves in that position, Tyson says, the world would be transformed overnight.
