Monday’s Big Idea

Today's Big Idea: Radical Transparency

Transparency is one of those buzz words that everyone likes to use today but doesn't always enable the most effective outcomes, in business or in politics.

Nonetheless, the IT revolution suggests that decision-making is moving inexorably in the direction of radical transparency. This means different things in business and politics. Many people are critical of Wall Street as being too short-sighted, and we right now have quarterly earnings reports. What if reporting was so transparent that we had daily earnings reports? Would anyone be able to even make sense of all that data?

In the political arena, we have thousands of pages of information about candidates, but what does that massive accumulation of information really tell us? On the other hand, in the wake of the financial crisis, citizens will continue to demand a greater and greater level of transparency about the way the government does business.
