Today's Big Idea: Decision Making
The great contribution of Daniel Kahneman and his colleagues to the psychology of decision making has been the undeniable evidence of how irrational we really are. Not only are the factors we tend to weigh most heavily in our most important life decisions ill-suited to good decision-making – we're rarely even conscious of what those factors are.
This should lead us to approach our own thinking and frameworks for viewing the world with real skepticism, and inspire us to apply rigorous, unflinching logic to our own attitudes and opinions. The take-home message here is that understanding ourselves and taking rational action in the world are a matter of meticulous and lifelong self-scrutiny.
