After the Ayatollah Khomeini issued a fatwa against Rushdie following the publication of The Satanic Verses in 1989, Salman Rushdie went into hiding and his brilliant literary career was threatened to be overshadowed by the notoriety that came from this one novel. 

After the fatwa was lifted and Rushdie was once again "free," the author's reputation is still deeply tied to the controversy over The Satanic Verses. 

And so the question is raised again on the occasion of the publication of Rushdie's memoir, is Rushdie a blasphemer or a humanizer?
