Monday’s Big Idea
Big Think's Virtual Convention of Ideas
Will you be watching the Democratic and Republican conventions this year? We suggest you should. But how will you be watching the conventions?
Some sites offer clever drinking games where you take a sip of beer every time a candidate says a certain buzz word. That's not what we have in mind. In fact, we would like your help in identifying the big ideas that arise at the conventions, in the debates, and for the rest of an election cycle that carries huge implications for the future of the United States and the world.
What qualifies as a big idea? We want you to help us decide that as well, but here are some guidelines. A big idea needs to have great change potential. It needs to be able to either revamp or reinvigorate institutions that aren't working. It needs to address a real problem and have an impact on the lives of a significant number of Americans. Paul Ryan's idea for entitlement reform is a big idea. You might not agree with it, but this virtual convention is all about giving these ideas their day in court.
