Sharpen Your Skills: Team Leadership
In a previous post, Ann Veneman told Big Think that instead of having a career plan that is overly goal-oriented, a highly useful skill is the ability to improvise. Bill Bradley takes that one step further, as he shares his colorful journey from high school basketball star to Ivy League student-athlete to Rhodes Scholar to NBA star to U.S. Senator.
At every turn, Bradley was advised to do something different, and aim lower than his ambitions told him to. Bradley, however, was defiant, and did what he knew was right for him. Even though he had an unsuccessful run for President in 2000, Bradley's story demonstrates how you can reach extraordinary heights.
So how did Bradley's success in sport translate to success in public service? In a separate video, Bradley tells us how teamwork is essential in both fields. As the world is becoming more connected, the hierarchies that once existed in organizations are breaking down and being replaced by collaborative teams of people working toward the same goal. And with the emergence of this team atmosphere, comes the increasing need for excellent team leaders.
