Saturday’s Big Idea

Today's Big Idea: Genetic Knowledge

Where did you come from and how does that affect who you are?

For one thing, possessing the knowledge that we share common ancestors can have the humanizing affect of enabling us to see past superficial differences and break down barriers.

Genetic knowledge can also help us understand a wide set of behaviors and why they exist. For instance, is there a gay gene? New research suggests so. If this research is confirmed, what are the implications? For one thing it would certainly put a decisive end to the nature versus nurture debate. Or would it?

According to geneticist Bryan Sykes, we're dealt a deck of cards in life. Those are our genes, and they have a major impact on who we are. At the same time, it's what you do with those cards that matters.

The Gay Gene: New Evidence Supports an Old Hypothesis

If a so-called "gay gene," exists, what is the evolutionary logic behind it? A new study offers evidence supporting the so-called "balancing selection hypothesis."

Nature or Nurture? The Surprising Way Genetics Could Reshape the Debate.

With the cost of genotyping falling at a rate faster than Moore's Law, genetics could be used to answer some of the burning questions of the social sciences.
