President Bush brought up the idea that those who support clean fuels should be strong supporters of nuclear power. What are the disadvantages of nuclear power beyond the meltdown and why or why isn't this our answer to the environmental problems we face?

What do you do about the waste that will be radioactive for thousands of years? NIMBY is alive and well at Yucca Mountain. We live 10 miles from a “Nuke” and are not happy about the propects of (1) stored spent fuel (2) “100% safe operation” and (3) corporate cost controls and cutting corners to increase profits that all can lead an accident that has an horrific potential for harm. Think Chernobyl.

How about building a nuclear powerplant in outerplace?

Actually, nuclear reactors produce a lot less waste than most people think.

Also, there are expansive safety measures that ensure that something like Chernobyl could never happen again. They were doing experiments and were not running their plant to code. They were essentially trying to see if they could run the turbines on kinetic energy. The safety precautions during this experiment amounted to a guy with his finger on an emergency stop button. Unfortunately, his reaction time was not good enough.

Another common misconception is that a nuclear reactor can produce a nuclear explosion. It can produce an explosion that emits radiation, but this is really more of a “dirty bomb” then an atomic bomb.

And yuykng, if they were to put a power plant in outer space, how would they get the electricity back to earth?
